What is the Transit2020 Coalition?

The purpose of Transit 2020 Coalition is to promote the development of a robust transit system for the Greater Providence Metropolitan Area and the State of Rhode Island through advocacy and public education for policy that supports transit. The Coalition aims to increase public understanding of the economic, social, and environmental value of transit.

The Transit 2020 Coalition is a direct result of the report Growing Smart With Transit, released in March 2007 by the Transit 2020 Working Group, and will advance the conclusions of that report and advise the Metropolitan Regional Transit study partially scoped by that report.

Transit 2020 Goals:

    • To develop a robust, seamless, user-friendly, intermodal transit system serving the Greater Providence Metropolitan Area and the State of Rhode Island that attracts new transit riders who currently choose not to use transit while continuing to serve well those who use and those who rely on transit today.

    • To develop a transit system providing the Greater Providence Metropolitan Area and the State of Rhode Island with seamless connections to regional transit options.

    • To increase public understanding of the economic development value of transit and of the various benefits of public investment in transit.

    • To promote the use of transit incentives and automobile disincentives in the public and private sectors.

    • To identify and secure the appropriate funding streams required for capital investments to build a stronger system and to those funding streams required to sustain that transit system.

    • To advocate for and actively promote land use policies and planning principles that increase transit use and decrease automobile-dependence.
